On Friday, December 20, a 19-year-old man attacked several students and a teacher at an elementary school in the Prečko district, resulting in the death of one child.
According to police, the attacker inflicted knife wounds on four students and a first-grade teacher before attempting to commit suicide. Law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene found him in the school restroom, bleeding heavily, and detained him.
A 7-year-old girl who was injured in the attack later died in the hospital. The other victims are under medical supervision. According to the portal Index, the teacher, who sustained chest wounds, is in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.
In response to the attack, the Croatian government declared December 21 a day of mourning. The motives of the 19-year-old attacker remain unknown. However, his mother revealed in an interview with Croatian media that her son suffers from mental health issues and had a history of self-harm.
