Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán believes Ukraine may still agree to a “Christmas truce.”
He made this statement during his traditional Friday broadcast on Kossuth Radio.
Speaking about his “peacekeeping mission,” Orbán mentioned that he had held talks with leaders of several countries, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This, he said, was significant because Erdogan had been the only successful mediator between the two sides when the grain deal was reached.
“Let’s at least aim for a situation where there is a Christmas truce. That’s why I’m trying to achieve a ceasefire and a large-scale prisoner exchange during Orthodox Christmas,” he said.
According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, since this would only last two to three days, the argument that one side or the other would gain an advantage is irrelevant.
“A Christmas truce would show that short-term peace is not hopeless,” Orbán added. He also noted that he had managed to persuade the Russian leader to support the Christmas truce and expressed his belief that Ukrainians could also easily change their position.
It’s worth recalling that President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s attempts to present himself as a “mediator” in resolving the war.
