Tragedy in Zagreb school: knife attack claims life of 7-year-old, injures six

A devastating knife attack at Prečko Elementary School in Zagreb left a 7-year-old girl dead and six others injured on Friday morning. The suspect, a 19-year-old male, has been detained by authorities.

The attack occurred at 9:50 am in the Prečko neighborhood. According to reports, the assailant, dressed entirely in black, initially assaulted a boy in the school corridor before entering a random classroom and attacking students and a teacher with a knife.

Health Minister Irena Hristić confirmed the injuries, stating that the wounded children and the critically injured teacher have been evacuated to various hospitals in Zagreb. Authorities revealed that the attacker fled to a nearby emergency room and attempted to take his own life but was stopped and apprehended by police.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković expressed his shock and grief over the incident during a government session. He assured the public that authorities are working diligently to investigate the attack and support the affected families.

“Several children have been taken to various hospitals in Zagreb,” Plenković said.

School-related attacks are a rare occurrence in Croatia. However, this tragedy follows a similar incident in neighboring Serbia last May, where a teenage shooter killed nine students and a school guard in Belgrade.
