Greenland rejects Trump’s offer to purchase territory, reaffirms independence

Greenland has once again rejected the idea of being sold to the United States, following comments by US President-elect Donald Trump expressing interest in taking control of the territory.

“Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland,” Prime Minister Mute Egede stated on Monday, responding to Trump’s repeated remarks about the Arctic island, which he first made several years ago.

Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is strategically important due to its location, hosting a large US space facility and lying on the shortest route between the US and Europe.

Trump’s latest comments, shared on his social media platform Truth Social on Sunday, said: “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

In response, Egede firmly stated, “We are not for sale and we will not be for sale,” emphasizing the importance of maintaining Greenland’s long struggle for freedom. However, he also reiterated the country’s openness to cooperation and trade with the rest of the world, particularly its neighbors. There was no immediate response from Denmark.
