Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently sparked a strong response from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk after discussing Hungary’s decision to grant political asylum to former Polish Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski.
Tusk, on social media platform X, shared Orbán’s direct comment: “Prime Minister Orbán does not like responsibility,” as the Hungarian leader explained his stance on asylum.
Romanowski, wanted by Poland for embezzling millions from the Ministry of Justice, faces serious charges, including embezzling over 100 million zlotys (around 25 million euros). Despite this, Orbán downplayed the issue, stating, “I do not want to raise this case to the premier level.” He added that Hungary aims to keep conflicts with Poland manageable and refrained from commenting on Poland’s rule of law situation.
In an interview, Orbán also accused the Polish government of persecuting the opposition and hinted that more Polish politicians might seek asylum in Hungary. He pointed out Hungary’s longstanding alliance with Poland’s ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), especially in their joint opposition to EU migration policies. Earlier this year, Hungary had already provided refuge to Daniel Obajek, a former CEO of Poland’s PKN Orlen, who fled from Polish law enforcement.
