The terrorist attack in Magdeburg could have a Europe-wide impact

The attack in Magdeburg occurred not only on the eve of Christmas but also during the election campaign period, which could significantly impact the political situation in Germany ahead of the parliamentary elections in February.

For Germany, the actions of the driver at the Christmas market in Magdeburg were a harsh blow. This is not only due to the number of victims, including a young child, but also because the tragedy occurred just before Christmas — a time associated with joy and family gatherings.

This incident happened just a day after the anniversary of one of the most tragic terrorist acts in Germany — in Berlin on December 19, 2016, when the extremist Anis Amri killed 13 people with a truck at a Christmas market.

The overall security situation in Germany, to put it mildly, is not improving. This is evidenced by the rise in violent crime, as recorded in police statistics. Another tragedy occurred less than three months ago when an assailant wounded three people in Solingen, also during the pre-Christmas period, when people were out enjoying the city festivities.

The terrorist attack in Magdeburg occurred at an extremely sensitive moment — just before Christmas and on the eve of the elections. In two months, elections will take place, and if the terrorist nature of this attack is confirmed, it could become a major topic in the election campaign.

The AfD continues to steadily gain support, reaching nearly 20% in polls. In turn, Friedrich Merz, the leader of the CDU and likely future chancellor, will come under pressure, especially after the attack in Magdeburg. He recently indicated his willingness to take bold steps in migration policy, and now it will be difficult for him to back down.

Changes in migration policy may affect not only Germany but also neighboring countries. This could lead to a series of similar decisions across Europe, becoming part of the possible legacy of the Magdeburg tragedy.
