Slovakia is considering the possibility of stopping electricity supplies to Ukraine if Kyiv follows through with its intention to halt the transit of Russian gas to Europe starting January 1.
This was stated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, according to Bloomberg. According to Fico, Ukraine’s decision would not be merely a political gesture but also “an extremely costly move” with significant repercussions for the European Union. He emphasized that Slovakia will assess the situation after January 1 and consider potential reciprocal measures.
After January 1, we will assess the situation and possible reciprocal measures against Ukraine. If necessary, we will cut off supplies of electricity badly needed by Ukraine during the grid blackouts, the Slovak prime minister said.
He added that Ukraine’s actions in this regard could jeopardize the energy security of the entire region.
Experts point out that halting the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine could lead to serious economic and political consequences for the EU, which partially relies on gas supplies via this route. Slovakia, being one of the key transit points for Russian gas to Europe, could also face rising energy prices and the need to reevaluate its energy policies.
