Finland discovers anchor marks near damaged undersea cable

Finnish authorities investigating damage to undersea cables have found seabed marks likely left by the anchor of the oil tanker Eagle S.

Sami Paila, head of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, stated that during underwater operations, “we were able to identify a drag mark on the seabed from start to finish.”

He noted that the drag mark extends “for tens of kilometers” and added that it remains unclear where exactly the ship’s anchor detached from its chain. The police also reported that poor weather conditions hindered investigations both on the ship and at the underwater site on Sunday.

In recent days, several undersea cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged, prompting regional countries and NATO to announce heightened security measures.

Finland detained the Eagle S in connection with the severed communications cable in the Baltic Sea. According to media reports, the ship was found carrying equipment that could potentially be used for espionage against aircraft and ships.
