VW CEO blames politicians for crisis, calls for bold national economic overhaul

Volkswagen (VW) faces its most challenging crisis ever, and CEO Oliver Blume points the finger at political leaders for creating an unfavorable economic environment. According to an internal document unveiled by Business Insider, Blume is calling for a comprehensive “German master plan” from the next federal government to address several pressing issues.

He emphasized that this strategy must prioritize various areas, including boosting research and development, enhancing digital infrastructure, ensuring sustainable and affordable energy, and securing a skilled workforce. The blame for Germany’s current economic stagnation, marked by two years of recession while other industrialized countries grow, lies partly with Economic Minister Robert Habeck, Blume suggested.

Blume didn’t shy away from highlighting Volkswagen’s own struggles, stating bluntly, “The VW Group is a restructuring case.” He stressed this wasn’t limited to a few brands but encompassed the entire company. A significant problem is the lackluster response from customers to VW’s shift toward electric mobility, which has compounded the company’s woes.

Addressing the federal election, Blume called for “a real departure” to restore Germany’s economic strength. He criticized the existing framework, saying it isn’t conducive to reviving the country’s industrial power. These comments were reportedly shared during an employee meeting.

The automaker’s plans reflect the gravity of the situation, with a proposal to cut 35,000 jobs by 2030 and sell off plants in Osnabrück and Dresden.

Volkswagen’s plea for political intervention underscores its broader concerns about Germany’s economic policies and the urgent need for a shift to revive both the company and the country’s industrial sector.
