A prisoner who took hostages has been detained in France

In a prison in the city of Arles, southern France, an inmate who had taken five hostages was apprehended.

This was reported by France’s Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, on the social network X. According to police and penitentiary services, the inmate, armed with a bladed weapon, was holding four medical staff members and a prison guard hostage.

Sources from the France Presse agency clarified that the man had been identified as having mental health issues. As reported by the CNews channel, he released one of the medical staff members before the operation concluded.

According to the newspaper La Dépêche, citing the police prefecture, the man voluntarily surrendered to the authorities.
