In 2024, Germany sharply increased its uranium imports from Russia, boosting deliveries by 70% compared to the previous year.
According to the German publication Der Spiegel, citing the Ministry of the Environment in Lower Saxony, the total import volume amounted to at least 68.6 tons of uranium.
The uranium is being delivered to the Advanced Nuclear Fuels (ANF) plant in Lingen, Lower Saxony, where plans are underway to produce nuclear fuel in collaboration with Russia’s Rosatom.
Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety confirmed the imports, noting that the European Union has not imposed any embargo on the export or import of nuclear fuel for peaceful purposes involving Russia.
The ANF facility is owned by the French company Framatome, which is actively pursuing cooperation with Russia’s Rosatom. In 2023, Framatome established a joint venture with the Russian company “TVEL Fuel.” Plans are in place to organize nuclear fuel production at the Framatome plant in Lingen.
