Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a class-action lawsuit related to privacy violations by its Siri voice assistant.
The lawsuit alleges that Siri may have unlawfully recorded private conversations and shared them with advertisers. Users claim that Siri sometimes activated accidentally, recorded private conversations, and then used the data to display targeted ads. For example, plaintiffs reported that discussing brands like Air Jordan or Olive Garden led to related advertisements. One user also complained about receiving medical-related ads after a private conversation with a doctor.
Under the terms of the settlement, tens of millions of Apple device owners—such as iPhone and Apple Watch users—are eligible to claim compensation of up to $20 per Siri-enabled device used between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. Apple denies any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to avoid prolonged legal proceedings.
