Snow and ice cause flight cancellations at Germany’s largest airport

Snow and ice led to the cancellation of dozens of flights on Sunday, January 5, at Germany’s largest airport – Frankfurt International Airport.

Due to adverse weather conditions, Frankfurt Airport canceled 120 out of approximately 1,990 flights scheduled for Sunday. The airport cited the need to clear runways and de-ice aircraft, describing this as a “more complex and demanding task.”

Poor visibility was another reason for the cancellations.

At Germany’s second-largest airport in Munich, 35 out of 750 flights were canceled late Saturday evening as a precautionary measure. Disruptions also affected Berlin Brandenburg Airport, where flight cancellations began Friday evening. In the capital, 30 flights were canceled due to icy conditions.

Germany’s Meteorological Office issued warnings of freezing rain on Sunday following overnight snowfall and advised passengers to avoid unnecessary travel.
