Terrorism-related investigations in Switzerland double since 2022

The number of active terrorism-related investigations in Switzerland has surged, doubling since 2022, according to Swiss Attorney General Stefan Blättler. In an interview with SonntagsZeitung, Blättler revealed that 120 cases are currently under investigation, with most involving actions tied to jihadist activity.

Blättler emphasized that proactive law enforcement efforts have successfully thwarted planned terrorist attacks. However, he cautioned that the threat remains significant. “We must expect terrorist activity in Switzerland to increase,” he warned.

Criticizing the oversight of previous Swiss governments, Blättler argued that domestic security issues were not adequately prioritized. He dismissed the perception that Switzerland has been spared from terrorism as misleading, suggesting that the country is far from immune to such threats.

Blättler also highlighted the strain on resources at the Attorney General’s office, where investigations into other crimes, including organized crime and cybercrime, have been sidelined due to increasing workloads and staffing shortages.

As Switzerland faces growing challenges related to terrorism, the Attorney General’s remarks underline the importance of maintaining vigilance and allocating resources to counter potential threats effectively.
