Poll: 26% of Germans believe “only the AfD can save” the country

Elon Musk’s assertion that “only the AfD can save Germany” has ignited a firestorm of controversy across the Federal Republic. Leaders from across the political spectrum, including the Federal President, Chancellor, and numerous left-wing politicians, have strongly denounced his statement.

Amid this uproar, the opinion research institute Insa conducted a survey to gauge public sentiment. The results? Roughly 26% of respondents indicated they (somewhat) agree with Musk’s claim, while 61% disagreed.

The survey revealed stark divides along party lines. As expected, 91% of AfD supporters backed Musk’s assertion. Among other parties, 19% of FDP voters agreed, along with 23% of BSW voters and 15% of Left Party supporters. Surprisingly, even one in ten Green Party voters and 12% of Union supporters sided with Musk’s statement. Meanwhile, 10% of SPD voters also found themselves in agreement.

Insa’s chief, Hermann Binkert, noted the significance of the debate. “More people agree with Musk’s statement than currently support the AfD,” he pointed out. In the institute’s latest polling, Alice Weidel’s party stands at 20%—a notable figure but still trailing the level of agreement with Musk’s controversial remark.

As the debate rages on, Musk’s comment has stirred the pot, shining a spotlight on Germany’s evolving political landscape and the polarizing role of the AfD.
