Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen commented on statements made by newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the potential annexation of Greenland, emphasizing that the island belongs to its inhabitants.
In an interview with Berlingske, Frederiksen stated:
“I want to make it absolutely clear that, from the perspective of the Danish government, Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”
Her response came after Trump, while discussing his son’s trip to Greenland, once again expressed interest in having the island join the United States.
This is not the first time Trump has shown interest in acquiring Greenland. During his previous presidency, he repeatedly raised the issue, prompting Denmark to reaffirm that “the island is not for sale.”
In December 2024, Trump returned to the topic, coinciding with intensified efforts by Greenland’s Prime Minister to advance the island’s campaign for independence from Denmark.
