Czechs are diving into January sales with vigor, purchasing more goods than they did last year. Retailers report that clothing, toys, household appliances, and electronics are especially in demand, as many shoppers use money received as Christmas gifts during the post-holiday discount season.
Following the holidays, stores launched discounts of up to tens of percent, available both in physical and online outlets, lasting until the end of January.
“From the very first day, it’s clear that customers are actively seeking discounts and buying in bulk,” said Iva Pavlůsková, spokesperson for Tesco. Toys and household items are among the top purchases, with Christmas decorations also being snapped up in preparation for next year.
Aneta Turnovská, spokesperson for Globus, highlighted widespread promotions covering thousands of products, such as electronics, home goods, and clothing, with discounts as steep as 60%. The trend is mirrored online, where about 85% of e-commerce stores have joined the sales this year—more than last year. Discounts average 45%, an increase from the previous year. “We expect sales to grow by a quarter compared to last year,” said the director of Shoptet, a company specializing in online store creation.
Clothing, household appliances, toys, and home goods remain the most sought-after items online.
Sales durations are largely dependent on inventory levels, but many promotions extend over time.
Alza, the country’s largest electronics retailer, is seeing robust demand across all categories, offering discounts of up to 50%. Spokesperson Eliška Čeřovská noted that sports equipment and healthy lifestyle products are particularly popular, as shoppers pursue New Year’s resolutions.
