Hundreds of police officers in various cities across Romania have taken to the streets to protest the cancellation of overtime pay, Digi24 reports.
In the Ialomița region, law enforcement officers have refused to report for duty. The protests have affected several police stations nationwide. In Cluj-Napoca, dozens of officers gathered outside the 4th Police Precinct, voicing their dissatisfaction with the government’s austerity measures, known as Ordonanța Trenulet. These measures have significantly reduced their income.
Police officers are complaining about the removal of bonuses for working on weekends and public holidays, as well as income reductions to as low as 2,000 lei in some cases, even for those who have dedicated decades to the service. Prison staff have also joined the protests.
Under the strict austerity measures implemented in the country, salaries have been frozen, and overtime is no longer compensated. Unions have announced they will continue their demonstrations until these decisions are reversed.
