The Speaker of the Polish Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, has announced that the country’s presidential elections will be held on May 18.
“We considered three possible dates: May 4, May 11, and May 18. After consultations with the National Electoral Commission, I decided to set the vote for May 18,” Hołownia stated during a special briefing.
More than ten candidates are already running for the presidency. Jarosław Kaczyński’s Law and Justice Party has nominated the director of the Institute of National Remembrance, Karol Nawrocki, as their candidate. Nawrocki is non-partisan and has not previously held public office.
The Civic Coalition, led by Donald Tusk, has proposed its candidate, the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski. Additionally, Szymon Hołownia himself, one of the leaders of the Confederation party Sławomir Mentzen, and Sejm deputy Marek Jakubiak, representing the Free Republicans faction, have also declared their participation in the elections.
