U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is considering declaring a state of economic emergency after his inauguration on January 20 to impose new tariffs on imports.
According to reports, Trump plans to invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which allows the president to control imports in the event of a national emergency. This would provide a legal basis for implementing broad tariffs on goods from both allied and adversarial countries.
Raising import tariffs has been one of the central themes of Trump’s campaign. He has repeatedly stated his intention to introduce additional tariffs on Chinese goods ranging from 10% to 100%, as well as a 10% tariff on imports from all other countries. Furthermore, Trump has promised specific tariffs of 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada.
Donald Trump, who will simultaneously become the 45th and 47th President of the United States, is set to be inaugurated on January 20.
