Trump is asking for a stay of the New York court case

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has filed a petition with the Supreme Court requesting a suspension of proceedings in a New York court, where a sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 10, 2025, in a case involving payments to an adult film actress.

Earlier, an appellate court rejected Trump’s attempt to delay the trial related to charges of falsifying business records. In his petition, Trump insists on an immediate halt to the criminal proceedings, including the hearing, arguing that his status as president-elect grants him immunity from criminal prosecution, as previously affirmed by the Supreme Court.

The New York District Attorney’s office opposes halting the case, stating that even if a sentence is not issued during Trump’s presidential term, the proceedings should continue. Trump’s legal team continues to push for the dismissal of the case, citing constitutional protections that, in their view, bar the prosecution of a sitting president-elect.

The charges stem from alleged falsification of Trump Organization records in connection with payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, with whom Trump is rumored to have had an affair. Despite a guilty verdict reached by the jury, Trump’s defense maintains that the case should be dismissed.
