Supporters of independent presidential candidate in Romania, Călin Georgescu, gathered for a protest outside the parliament building in Bucharest, which also houses the Constitutional Court. The protesters are demanding the holding of the second round of presidential elections.
The protest began around 9:30 AM, as Georgescu’s supporters, who are claiming external backing in his electoral campaign according to Romania’s Supreme Council for National Defense, started to gather. Traffic was blocked in front of the parliament as people appeared waving Romanian flags, with some holding photographs of Georgescu, as well as crosses and icons.
Protesters chanted slogans such as “Bring back the second round,” “Constitutional Court is a disaster,” and “Down with the dictatorship.” The protest is being held in support of a group of lawyers seeking to challenge the Constitutional Court’s decision to annul the elections, with the demonstration being called “The Great Legal Union of Romanians.” On Thursday, Georgescu once again urged people to participate in the protests and announced he would leave the country.
“I will lead our party to the heart of Europe, to the highest courts. Each of us is contributing to this historic mission, through which we are protecting our democracy,” Georgescu said.
