Police investigate drink spiking at UK Parliament bar

A parliamentary researcher reported her drink being spiked at a bar in the UK’s Palace of Westminster. The alleged incident occurred at Stranger’s Bar in early January, following MPs’ return after the Christmas break.

The woman alerted bar staff and security, prompting an investigation by the Metropolitan Police. The incident has raised concerns about safety at Westminster’s bars, which have long been criticized for a problematic drinking culture. Labour MPs recently called for alcohol restrictions on the parliamentary estate. Unions expressed worry over the incident’s impact on staff, calling for immediate action to improve safety.

The government has vowed to strengthen police responses to spiking in a broader effort to combat violence against women and girls. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned spiking as a serious crime with lasting consequences.
