U.S. President Joe Biden has decided not to take measures to block the social media platform TikTok, leaving the resolution of this issue to the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
According to the Associated Press, three days before the end of his term, Biden and his team decided to hand over the responsibility for addressing the potential ban on TikTok or applying new legislation to the company to the next administration.
The topic of banning TikTok has been actively discussed in the U.S. since a law passed in 2024 stipulated that the ban should take effect on January 19 — a day before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Despite Trump’s previous critical statements about the Chinese platform, his tone shifted after his election victory, and he has taken a more favorable stance toward the social media app.
Democrats are also making efforts to keep TikTok in the U.S. market. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer reported that he had discussed the matter with Biden and suggested giving ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, more time to find a buyer. However, an attempt by Democrats to extend the deadline for TikTok’s sale through new legislation was blocked by Republican Senator Tom Cotton.
