Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called on the European Union to abandon its sanctions policy against Russia and focus on restoring cooperation. He stated this in an interview with the publication Telex.
Orbán emphasized that during Hungary’s presidency of the EU, one of the main goals was to make peace a central topic of discussions. According to him, significant progress has been achieved in this regard, as “today everyone is talking about peace.”
He also expressed confidence that, although it will take time, a “sobering up” will eventually occur in Brussels. Currently, according to Orbán, European policy is experiencing a “state of intoxication.”
The Prime Minister noted that peace is essential for Hungary to achieve its economic goals. In this context, he highlighted the importance of changing the approach to the situation in Ukraine, which is “still being viewed solely through the lens of war.”
Orbán added that Ukraine poses an economic threat to Europe. He plans to implement protective measures to minimize the damage, particularly to Hungary’s and Poland’s agricultural sectors.
We are dealing with a state that cannot sustain itself independently. Without Western financial support, Ukraine would not be able to maintain its status as a country today, Orbán concluded.
