The birth rate situation in the Czech Republic has reached a critical point. In 2024, fewer than 84,000 babies were born in the country, setting a new all-time low since 1785. Even during World War I, the birth rate was higher than it is now.
Currently, even the top maternity hospitals in the country (especially in Prague) are only half full. The same situation is observed in numerous hospitals that care for premature babies, which are facing a lack of patients.
Experts are sounding the alarm, as this area of medicine in the Czech Republic is well-developed and renowned throughout Europe. Due to the low birth rates, there is a risk of staff reductions and the optimization of hospitals (reducing their numbers).
At the same time, Czech centers for egg and sperm freezing report that demand for their services has doubled compared to the previous year.
