Macron: The war in Ukraine won’t end tomorrow or the day after

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine will not end “tomorrow or the day after,” despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s promises to quickly bring it to a conclusion.

Macron made this statement in an address to the French Armed Forces in the municipality of Cesson-Sévigné, in northwest France, just before Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, January 20.

He emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine is far from over, asserting the importance of providing Ukraine with “the means to endure and enter any future negotiations from a position of strength.”

“The challenge the day after the fighting stops will be to ensure Ukraine has guarantees against any return to war on its territory, as well as guarantees for our own security,” Macron said.

During his speech, Macron also urged the government and military to present proposals by May on how to mobilize more young volunteers to “support the Armed Forces” if needed.

It’s worth noting that Donald Trump, during his campaign, had pledged to end the war in Ukraine even before his inauguration. He also vowed to resolve the conflict within 24 hours of taking office.
