Pope Francis: Vatican governor to be a woman from March

Pope Francis announced that in March 2025, Sister Raffaella Petrini will be appointed as the Governor of Vatican City.

He made this announcement during the Italian talk show “Che tempo che fa” on Sunday, January 19. Since 2021, Petrini has held the position of Secretary General of the Vatican Governorate. She will replace Archbishop Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, who will retire at the age of 80 on March 1, 2025.

Additionally, in November 2023, the Vatican confirmed that transgender individuals can participate in the sacraments of baptism and marriage, including the possibility of becoming godparents and witnesses at weddings. However, it was noted that in exceptional cases, if there is a risk of causing public scandal or confusing the faithful, participation in baptism may be restricted.
