The right-wing presidential candidate, Călin Georgescu, remains the most popular contender ahead of the repeat presidential elections scheduled for May.
This was revealed by a public opinion poll released late on Monday, with data provided by Reuters.
The poll, conducted by the sociological company Avangarde, showed that in the first round of the elections, set for May 4, Georgeșcu would receive 38% of the vote.
Krin Antonescu, the unified candidate from the “pro-European” coalition government, would get 25%. He is followed by the mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, who has stated that he might run as an independent candidate and would receive 17%.
Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition centrist Union for the Salvation of Romania, who had advanced to the canceled second round of elections alongside Georgeșcu, would get 6%.
The survey involved 1,354 people between January 10 and 16, with a margin of error of 2.6%.
The first round of Romania’s repeat presidential election will take place on May 4, and the second round will be held on May 18. It remains unclear whether Georgeșcu will be allowed to run for president again.
