Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that the country’s defense spending target remains at 2% of GDP. He made these remarks while speaking to journalists.
In response to a question about U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for NATO countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, Crosetto said that Italy has not yet reached the 2% target.
“We haven’t managed to reach 2% yet; our goal remains 2%, which is officially set by NATO,” he said.
Crosetto noted that the next NATO meeting will take place at the end of June.
“We will see if they set a new target. Right now, it’s 2%,” emphasized the Italian Defense Minister.
It is worth noting that Trump has confirmed that he believes it is necessary for NATO members, including European countries, to spend 5% of their GDP on defense.
