A new wildfire has engulfed northern Los Angeles, quickly spreading over an area exceeding 38 square kilometers.
Strong winds and dry vegetation have been the primary factors contributing to the rapid spread of the flames. Authorities have ordered the mandatory evacuation of more than 31,000 people. According to Reuters, the fire, named “Hughes,” has reached two-thirds of the size of “Eaton,” one of the largest recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, in just a few hours.
Officials have warned residents of the imminent threat to their lives. A “red flag” warning is in effect across most of Southern California due to the extreme risk of new fires caused by strong, dry winds.
The region remains at high risk after nine months without significant rainfall. The dry weather, combined with winds, has triggered a series of wildfires that have destroyed entire neighborhoods, including upscale areas where celebrities reside.
Currently, the “Eaton” fire, which has burned 57 square kilometers, is 91% contained. Another major fire has been 68% contained. Despite these efforts, wildfires in California have claimed 28 lives and destroyed or damaged approximately 16,000 structures since they began.
