Austria in talks with Taliban on return of refugees to Afghanistan

Two officials from the Austrian Ministry of the Interior visited Kabul to discuss the return of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan.

The Austrian Ministry of the Interior has initiated official negotiations with the Afghan movement “Taliban” regarding the acceptance of refugees. The ministry delegation, consisting of two members, was in the country ruled by radical Islamists until Wednesday. The newspaper “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” reported that the talks had a “technical-operational” nature.

The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that the negotiations in Kabul focused on how to “technically implement” repatriation. Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner is primarily interested in returning Afghans who have committed criminal offenses, as well as sending a signal to all those who do not obey the law.

The Federal Office for Immigration and Asylum has also closely coordinated its actions with other EU member states and the EU representation in Afghanistan, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

It is worth noting that in December, the Austrian government offered Syrian refugees a payment of 1,000 euros for returning to their homeland after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
