The Slovak government led by Prime Minister Robert Fico is planning preventive security measures in response to protests, which it claims are at risk of escalating into attempts to overthrow the government.
Fico stated that opposition groups are planning to escalate protests, including through the seizure of government buildings and attempts to overthrow the government.
Referring to information from intelligence services, the Slovak prime minister reiterated accusations that there is a group of unknown “experts” in Slovakia who assisted the protests in Ukraine in 2014 and in Georgia last year.
“The situation is serious. We see a structure that is trying to attack the constitutional order of the Slovak Republic,” Fico said after a meeting of the Council of State Security, which he chairs and which tasked the government with planning preventive measures.
At the same time, it remains unclear what specific measures will be taken.
Public groups organizing the protests, as well as the opposition, have firmly rejected Fico’s accusations. It was previously reported that the Slovak intelligence service had received information about a long-term organized influence operation aimed at destabilizing the country.
Fico himself, at a press conference with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban, stated that the Slovak opposition is preparing for a “Maidan” and the seizure of government buildings.
