Germany says park attacker had mental health issues and was due to leave in December

In Germany, it was reported that the attacker in the park suffered from mental health issues and was supposed to leave the country in December.

According to Reuters, the information was provided by Bavaria’s Ministers of Interior and Health, Joachim Herrmann and Judith Gerlach. Herrmann stated that the 28-year-old suspect, an Afghan national, attacked a kindergarten group with a kitchen knife in Schöntal Park in the city of Aschaffenburg.

The attack resulted in the deaths of a 41-year-old German man and a two-year-old boy of Moroccan origin. Three others were injured, including a two-year-old girl from Syria. Among the injured were also a 61-year-old man and a teacher.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene. According to the Minister of the Interior, the man had previously shown violent tendencies and was undergoing psychiatric treatment. He had applied for asylum, which was later rejected. He had promised to voluntarily leave Germany in December but stayed to continue his treatment.

The minister added that a search of the suspect’s apartment, located in a refugee shelter, revealed no signs of radical Islamist views, and the medications found confirmed his psychiatric treatment. The police also ruled out the involvement of other suspects.
