U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Sean Kerrane as the new Director of the Secret Service.
Kerrane, who was responsible for Trump’s security, protected him during an assassination attempt in July 2024 in Pennsylvania. The President shared this news on his social media platform, Truth Social.
It is a great honor to appoint Sean Kerrane as Director of the Secret Service. He showed incredible courage, risking his life to save me from an assassin’s bullet in Butler. I am confident that with his experience and dedication, he will make the agency stronger than ever, Trump stated.
Kerrane has 23 years of experience in law enforcement. His career in the Secret Service began in 2001 at the Newark office, where he was involved in operations, protection, investigations, and logistics. During Trump’s first presidential term, he served as an assistant special agent responsible for the President’s protection.
Kerrane’s appointment follows the resignation of Acting Director Ronald Rowe, who temporarily assumed the role after Kimberly Cheatle stepped down. Cheatle left the position in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Trump in July.
Previously, media outlets raised concerns about Kerrane’s managerial qualifications, noting his lack of experience leading large-scale divisions. In Trump’s inner circle, Kerrane oversaw a team of 85 people, a significantly smaller scope compared to the U.S. Secret Service. However, Trump believes Kerrane’s personal dedication and achievements make him a worthy candidate for the role.
