Friedrich Merz, the chancellor candidate from the CDU/CSU bloc, insists on the need to reform Germany’s immigration policy.
On Monday, January 29, the Bundestag will discuss a bill aimed at increasing border control and simplifying deportation procedures. The main point of the bill is the closure of Germany’s land border to illegal migrants. This move is part of the broader CDU/CSU program “Agenda 2030,” developed with the potential shift in power in mind.
The project has already been supported by the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Alternative for Germany (AfD). In order for the bill to be approved, the CDU/CSU will need five additional votes, which they could receive from independent MPs who were previously part of the AfD.
Merz emphasized that changes to immigration policy will be a prerequisite for any coalition negotiations after the elections.
