A man suspected of involvement in the October 2023 attack in Brussels has been arrested in the Spanish city of Malaga.
The shooting, which occurred before a match between Sweden and Belgium, resulted in the deaths of two Swedish football fans and injuries to another person.
According to Reuters, citing Spanish police, the suspect was detained at Malaga Airport while attempting to leave the country. His name has not been disclosed. Authorities allege that he supplied the firearm used in the attack.
The suspect is set to appear in court in Madrid, where his extradition to Belgium will be considered. He faces charges of terrorism and murder in Belgium.
The October incident sparked widespread outrage. The attacker, who shouted “Allahu Akbar” and was a supporter of ISIS, targeted Swedish football fans, indicating a deliberate nature of the attack. The gunman was critically injured during his apprehension by Belgian police and later died in the hospital.
Sweden’s Prime Minister described the attack as an assault on Sweden and its citizens, emphasizing the importance of combating terrorism.
