Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, firmly rejected any notion of the United States taking control of Greenland, following reports of former President Donald Trump’s interest in the autonomous Danish territory.
“Trump will not have Greenland. Greenland is Greenland,” Rasmussen stated on Tuesday, emphasizing the island’s autonomy and the rights of its people under international law.
He added, “The Greenlandic people are a people, also in the sense of international law. This is why we have said time and again that it is ultimately Greenland that decides Greenland’s situation.”
Greenland, an Arctic territory with rich natural resources and strategic significance, has long been of geopolitical interest but remains self-governing under the Kingdom of Denmark.
