Suspected left-wing extremist arson destroys 23 police vehicles in Munich

Authorities in Munich are investigating a suspected arson attack, believed to be politically motivated, that destroyed 23 police vehicles and caused an estimated €2 million in damages.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning in the city’s Allach-Untermenzing district, targeting the parking lot of the Munich police service dog unit.

At around 2:40 a.m., flames engulfed the lot, prompting a rapid response from 45 professional and volunteer firefighters. Although they managed to extinguish the fire within 45 minutes, the vehicles were completely destroyed, and the nearby police building suffered minor heat-related damage. Fortunately, no injuries to people or animals were reported.

Investigators strongly suspect arson as the cause, with the Munich criminal police’s state security department now leading the inquiry. Despite deploying 50 officers to search the surrounding area, no arrests have been made yet.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann condemned the attack in strong terms, saying, “This already has basic terrorist features. This is a serious crime directed against those who ensure our citizens’ safety every day.” Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter echoed these concerns, suggesting the attack may have been carried out by left-wing extremists. “Attacks on our security forces are an attack on our democracy,” he stated.

The arson comes amid a rise in politically motivated attacks in Munich and nearby areas, prompting authorities to establish a special task force, codenamed “Diamond,” to address these incidents.

Despite the damage, a police spokesperson confirmed the dog unit remains operational, though logistical challenges are expected to disrupt normal activities in the near future.
