OpenAI accuses the new Chinese neural network DeepSeek of data theft

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has accused the Chinese neural network DeepSeek of illegally using its data.

The company claimed that DeepSeek violated intellectual property policies by employing a method known as “distillation,” which allows training models using the outputs of more powerful neural networks.

This technology helps achieve similar results with fewer resources. Although distillation is a widely accepted practice in the industry, OpenAI prohibits its use for creating competing models. A company representative noted that the issue arises when this method is applied to develop a proprietary model, which they consider a violation.
