EU considers resuming Russian gas purchases as part of Ukraine deal

European officials are discussing the possibility of resuming pipeline gas supplies from Russia as part of a potential resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, according to the Financial Times, citing informed sources.

Supporters of this idea believe that returning to Russian gas purchases could help lower energy prices in Europe, push Moscow towards negotiations, and create conditions for establishing and maintaining a ceasefire.

However, the mere suggestion of such a move has already sparked a sharp reaction among Ukraine’s closest allies within the EU. According to the publication’s sources, the initiative has been backed by representatives from Germany, Hungary, and several other EU countries, while Eastern European diplomats and officials have strongly opposed it. They emphasize that significant efforts have been made in recent years to reduce dependence on Russian energy supplies.

Additionally, the potential resumption of Russian gas transit through Ukraine has raised concerns among American liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporters. According to two European officials, such a move could reduce the competitiveness of U.S. LNG in the EU market.

As of January 1, 2025, Gazprom has halted gas transit through Ukraine following the expiration of its agreement with Naftogaz, as Kyiv refused to extend it. Currently, the main route for Russian gas exports to Europe remains the TurkStream pipeline. In 2023, deliveries through this route reached 16.7 billion cubic meters, an increase of 23% compared to the previous year.
