Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing party “National Rally,” stated that France should adopt the tough immigration policy of U.S. President Donald Trump, particularly regarding countries that refuse to accept deported individuals.
As an example, she cited Trump’s pressure on Colombia and suggested using a similar approach for relations with Algeria. According to her, France must be more decisive in matters concerning its former colony, Algeria, and employ tactics similar to Trump’s, who threatened to impose sanctions on Colombia if it did not accept deported individuals. This led to an agreement that avoided a trade war.
Le Pen emphasized that if Algeria refuses to cooperate, she is ready to implement retaliatory measures, including blocking remittances and suspending visa procedures for citizens and politicians of that country. She also expressed her frustration that France shows weakness in its relations with states that, in her view, treat it with disrespect.
Additionally, Le Pen expressed admiration for Trump’s decisiveness at the start of his presidency, noting that he quickly began fulfilling his commitments to Americans, something that has long been absent in France.
On January 29, Trump ordered the expansion of the Migrant Operations Control Center at the Guantanamo base to house illegal migrants who pose a threat to the U.S. On the same day, a proposal by Friedrich Merz from the CDU/CSU regarding the fight against illegal immigration was supported in Germany, following a knife attack in Bavaria committed by an Afghan migrant with mental health issues.
