Swiss couple convicted for funding ISIS militant son

A Swiss Federal Criminal Court has convicted a couple for supporting terrorism after they transferred money to their son, who joined ISIS in 2015.

The parents sent over 60,000 Swiss francs to their son between 2016 and 2019, with the final payment of 40,000 francs made while he and his family were in Kurdish custody.

The 60-year-old mother claimed her son was forced to go to Syria due to the civil war and argued in court that the money was intended to help him return to Switzerland with his wife and daughter. However, the court sided with the prosecution, asserting that the parents should have known part of the funds could benefit ISIS.

The mother received a 20-month probation sentence, while the father was given an eight-month sentence. The ruling is not final and can still be appealed in the appellate court and the Swiss Federal Supreme Court.
