American prosecutors have dropped the criminal case against the last two defendants in the case involving the storage of classified documents at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
According to AP, the cases of Trump’s assistant Walter Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira were closed. They were accused of conspiring with Trump to obstruct an FBI investigation into the documents that the former president took with him after leaving the White House.
Earlier, in July 2024, District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the main case, citing what she considered the illegal appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith. The US Department of Justice initially appealed the decision, but after Trump’s election victory, they withdrew the appeal, leaving the case against his aides intact.
On January 29, prosecutors notified the US Court of Appeals in Atlanta of the withdrawal of the remaining appeal, thereby officially closing the case.
This event marks the conclusion of two legal proceedings initiated by Special Counsel Jack Smith against Trump. Smith himself left the Department of Justice in early January, shortly before Trump’s return to the White House.
