Explosion at Spanish military factory injures six, investigation underway

An explosion at a military explosives plant in Javali Viejo, southeastern Spain, left six people injured on Thursday, January 30.

The blast occurred at a facility owned by Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, a company specializing in artillery ammunition, mortar shells, medium-caliber rounds, and rocket propulsion systems.

Emergency services, including firefighters from the Murcia provincial fire and rescue department, police officers, and environmental specialists, responded after the plant’s alarm was triggered in the afternoon.

The explosion sparked two fires—one spanning approximately 1,000 square meters and another covering around 2,000 square meters of nearby shrubland. Both fires have since been contained.

The injured individuals, aged between 30 and 52, suffered burns, smoke inhalation, and traumatic brain injuries. Five were hospitalized in Murcia, while one received treatment at the scene.

Spanish authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.
