Germany will keep temporary border checks in place “until external border protection truly begins to function,” Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated.
On January 30, Faeser was in Warsaw for a meeting of EU interior ministers, where migration policy was a key topic of discussion.
“We will maintain border controls until external border protection truly starts working,” Faeser said.
However, she assured that “the Schengen Area will eventually have open borders again.” The minister pledged to her EU counterparts that Germany would continue to act in accordance with EU law and its own constitution.
“Europe can rely on this federal government,” she added.
The current checks at Germany’s internal land borders are set to continue until March 15.
