Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, following Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, stated that Budapest would oppose the next extension of EU sanctions against Russia if Ukraine does not refrain from actions that threaten Hungary’s energy security.
Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary has always been against sanctions on Russia and believes they should be lifted as soon as possible. He added that Hungary is prepared to block the extension of sanctions if Ukraine does not change its policy regarding Hungary’s energy security.
If the European Commission does not fulfill its obligations and ensure that Ukraine does not take actions that undermine our energy security, the responsibility for the decision on sanctions will lie with them, the minister stated.
Earlier, Viktor Orbán said Hungary had received a “guarantee” from the EU regarding the restoration of gas transit through Ukraine and threatened to block sanctions if these promises were not fulfilled.
