In 2024, the number of asylum applications in Germany dropped by 34%, totaling 213,499 compared to 322,636 the previous year.
In January alone, there was a 37% decline compared to the same month in 2023. The number of illegal migrants also decreased by one-third, from 127,549 to 83,572.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) welcomed these figures amid an intense migration debate ahead of the February 23 elections. She emphasized that the decline in applications confirms the effectiveness of government measures. Authorities will continue to combat illegal migration despite criticism of stricter border controls from neighboring countries.
Public discontent over migration has intensified following a series of attacks involving immigrants, including a car ramming incident and a fatal stabbing that claimed eight lives.
