Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the left-wing party bearing her name, claims that German—and broadly European—industry has no chance of survival without access to cheap energy resources from Russia.
Wagenknecht argues that Germany must resume imports of Russian natural gas to revive its economy.
“The reality is simple: German industry has no chance without access to Russian raw materials and energy resources. It is collapsing, just like European industry,” she stated.
“While it is true that we should not be dependent on Russia, it is just as dangerous to be dependent on the U.S., as we are now,” she added.
Wagenknecht pointed out that replacing dependence on Russian gas with reliance on much more expensive American gas has enabled former U.S. President Donald Trump to engage in blackmail.
On the issue of energy resources and the need to resume Russian imports, Wagenknecht shares views similar to those of Germany’s right-wing. Notably, the leader of Alternative for Germany has promised to restore the operation of the Nord Stream gas pipeline if the party comes to power.
