The United Kingdom plans to increase imports of gas and weapons from the United States to avoid Trump’s tariffs

London is looking for ways to avoid harsh tariffs on British exports to the US that could be imposed by the Trump administration. According to Politico, one possible solution the British authorities are considering is increasing purchases of American liquefied natural gas (LNG).

US President Donald Trump stated that the UK could reach an agreement that would help avoid sanctions. In response, the British government is considering expanding LNG imports, which would also compensate for the decline in gas production in the North Sea.

Former UK Energy Minister Kwasi Kwarteng also emphasized that the US is the most logical gas supplier for the country, as alternatives like Russia and Qatar are unacceptable. Moreover, the Trump administration has already started to lift restrictions on issuing permits for LNG projects that were introduced during Joe Biden’s presidency.

In addition to energy resources, London is considering expanding purchases of American weapons, including additional F-35 fighter jets. Earlier, the UK ordered 48 of these aircraft, although it initially planned to purchase 138. A possible return of Trump to the White House could adjust these plans.

Experts also warn that Washington may demand the UK increase imports of American agricultural products, including meat and poultry. This issue has already caused disagreements in previous trade talks, as the UK is unwilling to change its food safety standards.
